Root canal treatment
Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics) is a dental procedure carried out to treat an infected tooth.
It is often carried out as an alternative to tooth extraction.
Infection is caused by bacteria invading the tooth, and this can be due to a number of reasons, including: tooth decay, deep fillings, leaky fillings or damage to teeth as a result of trauma, such as a fall.
Root canal treatment may be the treatment of choice based on the presenting symptoms and clinical/radiographic findings.
More about root canal treatment
When a tooth has become infected, quite often patients will present with toothache which may or may not be accompanied by a swelling. This will not improve with time and so it is important to contact us for an appointment if you are suffering from a toothache.
If left untreated, the infection may become established, reducing the success rate of treatment; or in severe cases, a tooth may be deemed unrestorable, requiring extraction.
